Courses for Effective Writing and More...

FAQs

Are there any prerequisites?
No. There are no prerequisites for The Business Writing Upgrade for Managers and Supervisors, except for a willingness to improve your writing.

Do I need to send writing samples?
Yes. Acceptance to the course requires completing a short writing exercise (200-300 words) as part of your registration to help us analyze your needs. Based on the exercise, if we don’t believe the course will result in a meaningful difference in your writing, we will refund your tuition.

Will you use my writing samples as examples during class or in subsequent courses?
No. All writing samples that you provide us before, during, or after the course are kept in strict confidence.

What is the tuition?
  • Early tuition is $149 per person, if payment is received at least a week before class.
  • If payment is received less than a week before class, tuition is $249 per person.
Are group discounts available?
Yes. Contact us for a quote at group@communicationupgrade.com. Tell us how many students you want to register.

Can I take this course if I live outside the United States?

Yes. However, all instruction and writing assignments are based on English as written and spoken in the United States.

Is there a live classroom version of this course?
No. Most of our students find the online format much more conducive to their busy personal and professional lives.

Will I receive a certificate of completion?
Yes. After fulfilling the requirements of the course (attendance at all four sessions and completion of all writing assignments), you will receive a professional certificate to display proudly in your office. In addition, you can keep the Toolkit for reference.

Who can be a mentor? What if I don’t have one?
A mentor can be a supervisor, manager, co-worker, professional acquaintance or even one of your employees. Just look around your workplace; you’ll find several good candidates--for example, a marketing writer in the sales department, a company newsletter editor in the human resources department, or a technical writer in the engineering department. However, you must first obtain permission for that person to be a mentor. If you still can’t find a mentor, we’ll suggest alternatives based on your situation.

What role does my mentor play in this course?
Your mentor encourages you while providing practical feedback on your writing. So look for a mentor who is positive, encouraging and has good writing and editing skills. During the course you will be directed to show and discuss your writing assignments to your mentor as well as submit them to the instructor. After the course you’ll be encouraged to continue to show particularly important reports and e-mails to your mentor for feedback before sending or submitting them so you can build on the principles learned in the course and make improving your writing an ongoing endeavor.
